Clinical Focus
Concussion Recovery
A concussion can leave you dealing with more than a headache. Your neck may feel stiff, your shoulders may stay tense, and everyday movement can feel uncomfortable. At his Vernon clinic, Kevin assesses the soft tissue and movement concerns that may be part of your recovery.
Where massage therapy fits
A concussion is a brain injury and needs medical assessment. Massage therapy does not treat the brain injury itself or replace your concussion care plan. It may help with accompanying muscle tension, neck discomfort, and guarding when treatment is appropriate.
Kevin’s clinical focus has included concussion recovery since 2019. The starting point is understanding what happened, what symptoms you have now, and what other care you are receiving.
What to expect at your appointment
Kevin will review your health history, ask about your symptoms, and assess movement within your comfort level. Let him know about headaches, dizziness, light or sound sensitivity, changes in sleep, and any advice you have received from your doctor or rehabilitation provider.
Treatment is adjusted to your tolerance. That may mean gentle work around the neck, shoulders, upper back, or jaw, changes in positioning, and breaks when needed. Stronger pressure is not automatically better. Tell Kevin if anything increases your symptoms so treatment can be changed or stopped.
When to seek medical care first
After a head injury, a worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizures, increasing confusion, slurred speech, weakness, or difficulty waking requires emergency medical care. Call 911 or go to an emergency department. Do not wait for a massage appointment.
For ongoing dizziness, balance problems, or vision changes, your medical provider may recommend specific rehabilitation. Massage therapy is not a substitute for that care.
